MAYFIELD, Ky. -- The Mayfield Cardinals are less than 24 hours away from their shot at a state championship.

The Cardinals will kick-off against Owensboro Catholic tomorrow in the 2a state championship in Lexington.

But before that could happen, the Cardinals had some final business to attend to back home. Mayfield High School held a pep rally this afternoon to send off to the big game.

Mayfield's cheerleaders, band and football players all did their part to fire up the school before ultimately taking off for Lexington.

It's been a challenging stretch in the state championship for the cardinals in recent years.

The program has lost in its last four trips, including a loss to beechwood last season.

But the Cardinals believe they're as hungry as ever to win state title No. 13 Friday night.

"I think we're really hungry," said senior linebacker Ethan Kemp. "To come back, especially after losing by one point last year, this is really get back game."

"We have a lot to prove," said senior defensive lineman Jaylen Bass. "We lost by one point last year, and we're the better team. We should be able to win."

"A lot of our seniors this year played in that state game," said senior defensive lineman Landon Kemp. "Us going back, we're trying to get revenge. We came really short last year against Beechwood. We're just going to try and win a state title."

Mayfield and Owensboro Catholic will kick-off at 4 p.m. ET at Kroger Field.
