Francine is weakening after striking Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane as it heads far inland from the Gulf Coast. The system knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, sent storm surge rushing into coastal communities and raised flooding fears in New Orleans and beyond. As heavy rain drenched the northern Gulf Coast, New Orleans awoke Thursday to widespread power outages and debris-covered streets. At its peak more than 450,000 customers were without power. During the storm, the state reported that around 500 people stayed in emergency shelters, that number has since dwindled. There were no reports of deaths or injuries.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has brought attention to an Ohio city by airing false allegations that immigrants are abducting and eating pets. It's part of a timeworn political tradition to cast immigrants as outsiders whose strange behavior is a shock to American culture. Trump is amplifying earlier claims about Springfield's Haitian immigrants made by his running mate, JD Vance. Officials in the town of about 60,000 people say there have been no credible or detailed reports about the allegations. Some Haitian immigrants in Springfield say the lies have made them fearful about rising divisiveness in the predominantly white, blue-collar city.

Kamala Harris has pressed a forceful case against Donald Trump in their first and perhaps only debate before the presidential election. The event Tuesday night showcased their starkly different visions for the country on abortion, immigration and American democracy. The Democratic vice president seemed to get under the skin of the Republican former president, provoking him with reminders about the 2020 election loss that he still denies, mocking his rally crowds and delivering derisive asides at his other false claims. Trump questioned why Harris was proposing ideas she hadn’t accomplished while serving as vice president.

The first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump concluded Tuesday night. Prior to the event, community members in Paducah expressed their hopes and expectations for the debate, laying out policies they hoped each candidate would touch on.

Republicans are more likely to trust Donald Trump and his campaign over government certified election results, according to a new survey from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts. And while most Americans trust government-certified election results, they are also heading into the November election with concerns about misinformation and a low trust in the information they receive from presidential candidates and the federal government. Many find it difficult to access information about presidential candidates but easier to find information about how and where to vote.

Trump’s dominant stake of 114.75 million shares was valued at $6.2 billion on May 9. It’s now down to about $2.1 billion, a sharp drop that has knocked Trump off the Bloomberg Billionaires Index of the world’s 500 richest people.
